Bags under the eyes are definitely not a sight to behold, many people deal with this problem. You're not alone. Eye bags tends to make you look older than your age, but before you look for a treatment option, it is important to determine the cause.
Tiredness and lack of sleep are the most common causes of under eye bags. Other causes includes;
- Stress
- Water retention
- Crying
- Aging
- Alcohol
- Allergies
- Sun exposure
- Smoking
- Excess salt
- Medical conditions
- Heredity
1.Sleep properly; Make sure you aim for at least 6-8 hours of sleep per night. Never go to sleep wearing makeup and always wash face before going to sleep.
2.Cold compress; Wet a clean washcloth with cool water and hold against the skin under and around your eyes for 5mins. Do it few times a day, you can also splash cold water on your eyes often until it reduces. CAUTION: make sure the water you use is not icy cold or it could lead to frostbite.
3.Tea bags; whether you have black tea or green tea, you can use them to treat eye bags.
- Steep 2 tea bags in hot water for 3-5 minutes
- Chill the tea bags in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.
- squeeze out the extra liquid and place them on your under eye area.
- leave tea bags there for 10-15mins.
- repeat few times daily.
4. Cucumber;
-cut thick slices off a cucumber
-chill the slices in the refrigerator for 10-15 mins
-put the cold slices over your closed eyelids for 10 mins.
-repeat daily.
5. Coconut oil;
-lightly massage a few drops of extra virgin coconut oil under the eyes.
-allow to sit for at least 30 minutes
- wash off with cold water
- use 2-3 times daily or overnight.
6. Aloe vera; is very nourishing to the skin and it reduces inflammation.
-extract pure aloe vera gel from the leaf.
-gently massage the gel around your eyes.
- allow it to sit for 5-10 mins.
-rinse off with cool water
- repeat 2 times daily.
7. Egg white; contains properties that help tighten the skin around the eyes.
-separate yolk from the white
- whip egg white to get a foamy texture
-add few drops of witch hazel and mix well (optional).
-using a clean makeup brush, apply this mixture to your under eye.
-Allow to dry, then rinse off with plenty of cool water.
-repeat daily.
8. Witch hazel; is a natural astringent and also has a tightening effect
- mix 10-15 drops of witch hazel into 1 cup of lukewarm water.
-Soak a washcloth in this solution.
- place it over closed eyelids for 10 minutes.
- repeat 2 times daily until you notice improvement.
9. Saline water;
- Add ½ teaspoon of salt to 1 cup of lukewarm water and stir it until the salt completely dissolves.
- soak 2 cotton balls in this solution.
- lie down with head elevated.
- place a cotton ball over each closed eyelids for 5 mins.
- rinse the area with cool water
- repeat as many times as needed.
10. Drink more fluids; make sure you drink plenty of water throughout your day as it helps to keep your body hydrated and skin supple. When the body is dehydrated it holds onto fluids which can cause puffiness. Drinking water helps flush excess salt from your system, drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily.
ADDITIONAL TIPS
- Never go out in the sun without applying sunscreen.
- Increase intake of vitamin C.
- Moisturize face regularly.
- Exercise regularly.
